Machine Vision System Design

Like any automation component a machine vision system must provide consistent performance with a high degree of accuracy 24/7/365 under any normal conditions which may arise in the production environment.

Design of a successful machine vision requires a detailed understanding of the effect on the image and vision tools of factors such as:

  • Variation in product positioning and/or orientation.
  • Variation in ambient lighting conditions.
  • Allowable variations in product appearance.

The software design, i.e., the choice, combination and interaction of vision tools used to perform the test/s must also take into account the effects of these factors.

A successful design must mitigate the effects of these by defining physical elements such as

  • Lighting type, e.g., LED low angle, laser line projector.
  • Optics, e.g., telecentric lens.
  • Part handling requirements.
  • Camera resolution.
