How to maintain graders for a longer lifespan

The main use for rollers is to crush, knead or vibrate loose materials by applying direct pressure. The rolling process is used to compact loosely bound foundation materials, so they remain compacted and remain bound together. There are various types of rollers, and their use depends on the particular job on hand. These include Cylinder road rollers, Vibratory rollers, Rubber-tyre rollers and Tamping rollers. In this blog we will focus on the Cylinder roller.

Cylinder road roller

This is probably the most common roller in use today. The traditional cylinder roller is a simple drum or set of drums typically made of steel. They usually come in one of two types.

The tandem roller has single drum wheels at the front and rear of the machine while 3-wheeled rollers have one larger drum wheel and the front and 2 behind. They are also known as smooth wheeled rollers and are mostly used for consolidating stone or similar crushed material on flat terrain. They work best with surface dressings such as rolling tarmacadam to create a smooth, flat surface.

The weight of both types of cylinder roller varies from 2 to 8 tons, and weight distribution can be adjusted by filling the drum wheels with ballast. Some rollers will have eater sprinkling systems for keeping the roller drums clean.

Slow moving, with an operating speed of 2 to 8 kph they typically need to make eight passes for adequate compacting of a 20cm sub-base layer although this depends on the type of layer. 

Single-drum roller

This type of smooth roller has one steel drum at the front end with pneumatic tyres at the back. It is also called a road roller or steamroller. Due to its sturdy tyres, it has quality traction.

Double-drum roller

As opposed to the single-drum roller, the twin-drum roller has 2 steel drums with 1 found at the front and 1 located at the back. As a result, the drums move the roller forward and backwards, not the tyres. Because it lacks tyres, this type of machine does not have great traction.

The smooth roller works best at construction and roadwork job sites. Single-drum rollers compact soil, gravel and asphalt and prepare the surface for driveways, sidewalks and foundations. They create a smooth and flat ground surface. The double-drum roller is mostly utilized for asphalt compaction and other aggregate base materials. It works best on projects involving roads, paths, playgrounds and parking lots.

Padfoot rollers use pressure, vibrations and impact to compact the materials they are working on. They also use manipulation which is great for compaction jobs that require a uniform look throughout. Padfoot rollers can increase the strength of the soil because of the tapered pads on the roller that compact the soil.

What is it used for?

Padfoot rollers are useful for projects where you need to compact soil at great depths. The padfoot roller is slightly smaller than its counterparts which makes is much easy to move around in smaller spaces. An example of a job for a padfoot roller is filling trenches because of its manipulation force and manoeuvrability. The padfoot roller can easily fit into a narrow trench and will compact the trench with a uniform look. The soil that padfoot rollers work well with is soil that is combined with cohesive materials such as clay. The padfoot roller should not be used for jobs that require quick turnaround time as the roller works best with materials such as rock and clay at slow speeds. 

Crawler Excavators

Crawlers get their name from their uncommon undercarriage. Unlike other excavators, they move on tracks instead of wheels. Crawler excavators are normally used for mining projects and heavy-duty construction such as trench digging and grading. They are perfect to use for jobs on mounds as their tracks make it easier for them to climb up and slide down the hill slopes.

Long Arm Excavators

These excavators have long arms and booms, hence the name, that give them a larger range allowing them them to access places that would otherwise be difficult to reach. These excavators work well in demolition because of their long arms that can be fitted with different attachments for breaking up hard materials.

Dragline Excavators

This is quite a large excavator that is usually assembled on site. It has a unique system that consists of a bucket attached to a hoist rope and a dragline. The dragline is attached to the carriage. This type of excavator is used in heavy-duty construction such as road excavations and underwater jobs.

Mini Excavators

These lightweight excavators are easy to transport to the sites that they are used for. These small, manoeuvrable excavators can be used for trenching and other utility work in residential, commercial and industrial areas.
