A tractor loader backhoe is an interesting invention because it is actually three pieces of construction machinery combined into one single unit. A backhoe loader is:

  • A Tractor
  • A Loader
  • A Backhoe

Each part of machinery is suited to a particular type of work. On a typical construction site, the backhoe operator usually uses all three components in order to get the work done.

The center structure of a backhoe loader is the tractor. Just like the tractors that farmers use in their fields, the backhoe tractor is designed to move easily over all kinds of rough terrain. It has a powerful, turbocharged diesel engine, large, rugged tires and a cab with basic steering controls such as steering wheel, brakes, etc.

The loader is attached to the front of the tractor and the backhoe is attached at the back. These two components serve quite different forms of functions.

The loader can do several different things. In many applications it is used like a big, powerful dustpan or coffee scoop,  to pick up and carry large amounts of loose material and usually is not dug with. It’s also used to push dirt like a plow, or to smooth things over like a butter knife. The operator controls the loader while driving the tractor.

The main tool of the TLB is backhoe. It’s used to dig up hard, compact material such as earth, or to lift heavy loads, such as a sewer box. It can lift this material and drop it onto a pile to the side of the hole its digging.

Uses

TLB’s can be used for a wide variety of tasks: earth moving, trenching small demolitions, construction, powering building, breaking asphalt, landscaping, digging holes/excavation and paving roads. Being relatively lightweight, they can travel between sites under their own power, or they can be moved with Lowbeds. backhoe-loaders are made very useful and common in urban engineering projects   such as construction and repairs in areas too small for larger equipment due to their relatively small frame and precise control. Their compact size and versatility makes them one of the most popular urban construction vehicles. In recent years, small compact tractors have become very popular with private homeowners.  These tractors offer private homeowners the ability to perform minor excavation projects.
